The Saradha chit fund scam has been one of the biggest financial frauds in India's history. The multi-crore scam which primarily operated in West Bengal had duped lakhs of investors, mostly poor and marginalized, out of their hard-earned savings. The scam was unearthed in 2013, and since then, various agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have been investigating the matter.

The leader of the opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed his concerns to the Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the CBI's reluctance to prosecute the "Biggest Beneficiary" of the Saradha Chit Fund Scam, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Suvendu Adhikari has been a vocal critic of the West Bengal government and has accused the ruling party of shielding the accused in the scam.

In his letter, Suvendu mentioned - "....and amount of more than rupees 6.21 crores has already been paid from the West Bengal CM relief fund meant for helping victims of natural/unnatural calamities to m/s Tara TV which was a Media company under m/s Sharda group of companies it is submitted that the CM relief fund has regularly paid the amount at the rate of rupees 27 lakhs per month for a period of 23 months from May 2013 to April 2015 the CBI document states it is submitted that the set amount where purportedly given towards salary payments of the employees of the state media company that was under investigation for being part of m/s Sharda group of companies"

He also pointed out the court's observations and CM Mamata Banerjee's paintings in his letter to the PM. "The people of West Bengal are fed up with the slow-paced investigation against the high and mighty of the state. The state is in the grapple of corruption and want the perpetrators to face action for their misdeeds. A mandate can't be misconstructed as impunity and regarded as a license to loot people and siphon public money", Suvendu added.
